Porsche Harris could have never anticipated that a single-day, company-led volunteer event would lead to discovering a passion for helping her community’s most vulnerable members: children in crisis.

Upon stepping into the Providence House, Harris, a gas operations supervisor in Cleveland, Ohio, was in awe of how the emergency shelter cared for children facing neglect or abuse. From that moment on, she became deeply committed to community service- helping hundreds of local kids along the way through many hours of volunteer work.

“I really believe in the phrase ‘the children are our future’,” said Harris. “These children need all the positivity that can be pushed their way. Whether it’s in the form of someone singing a song to them or playing a game with them, every little bit counts. They’ll remember these moments for a lifetime.”

Harris’ dedication to her community led to her nomination as a Volunteer of the Year. As a part of this award, Harris directed her $5,000 from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation to the Cleveland Providence House.

“Porsche is a treasured Providence House childcare volunteer,” said Natalie Leek, President and CEO of Providence House.” “In recognition of her direct care and service to babies and children in our Crisis Nursery, the Dominion Energy grant was used to support our children’s daily care and activities.”

“To me, serving others means giving your time, money, or resources when you have them in abundance, where others may not have them at all.”

-Porsche Harris, Dominion Energy Volunteer

Harris’s passion for making these life-changing differences also resulted in the transformation of a local school’s idle space into a library. Leading a team of Dominion Energy volunteers, Harris and her colleagues created a quiet sanctuary within the school where students can continue to grow and learn.

“To me, serving others means giving your time, money, or resources when you have them in abundance, where others may not have them at all,” said Harris.

While Harris says she admittedly felt awkward for receiving the Volunteer of the Year designation, she hopes her actions will inspire others to lend a helping hand in their communities.

“If not you, then who?” asks Harris. “The world is ours to destroy or uplift and make better than it was before. Which will you choose?”
