Solar energy in Virginia and nine other states
According to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the amount of sunlight that hits the Earth every 1.5 hours is enough to handle the world's energy needs for an entire year. Whether it is solar panels at your home or large-scale solar farms, solar systems work the same. Solar panels absorb sunlight, passing the energy through the layers of the panels and converting it into electricity
Solar energy is key to Dominion Energy's clean energy growth. Since 2013, we've helped bring 2,200 megawatts (MW) of solar into operation in ten states. That is enough energy to power about 550,000 homes at peak output.
Dominion Energy currently has solar energy services in five states. There are plans for a significant expansion of large-scale solar energy in Virginia. According to Dominion Energy Virginia’s most recent long-term plan, at least 15,900 megawatts of new solar energy could be added in the next 15 years.
